Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About the LMS Review
This is part of the project to review MTSU’s Learning Management System (LMS).
What is happening (why is MTSU doing this LMS review, and why now)?
The contract for the current MTSU learning management system (D2L Brightspace) ends on December 31, 2026. We are in the fourth year of a five-year contract with D2L. So, MTSU needs to determine whether to continue with D2L via a new contract or change to a different LMS vendor.
What is the timeline and process for deciding? Who will decide which LMS MTSU will use?
The provost will ultimately decide which LMS we use, with a recommendation coming from the LMS workgroup by May 15th, 2025. The LMS workgroup will solicit extensive feedback from the campus community, as seen on the schedule of events.
How can I give feedback?
Please visit this feedback form to share information or feedback with the LMS work group.
Why is MTSU considering only D2L or Canvas, as opposed to other products?
D2L Brightspace and Instructure Canvas are the two leading LMS products for higher education. These two would give us the most functionality, features, compatibility, and ease of integration.
What about all the products we use that integrate with D2L, such as Panopto and Zoom?
Everything MTSU currently supports that is integrated with D2L can also be integrated with Canvas.
If MTSU were to move to Canvas, how would courses be converted from D2L to Canvas?
Canvas typically employs a vendor (K16 Solutions) who specializes in converting courses from one LMS to another when an institution changes LMS products. Canvas representatives will describe this process during their demonstration on campus.
